Should I upgrade my GPU with a GTX 970 when my processor is a i7-860 Lynnfield?

Hello,

I purchased my computer about 5 years ago for daily use and gaming. I've upgraded the RAM and to an SSD.

The current specs are:
i7-8602.8GHz Lynnfield CPU
Samsung SSD 840 EVO 256GB
AMD HD-Radeon 5770
14GB DDR3

My question is this: If I were to upgrade my PSU to 500Watt, could I buy a Nvidia GTX 970 and see optimal performance with no "bottle necks"?

I hear I can get a bottle neck because my CPU is dated, but others on forums say I wouldn't even notice.

So I guess to simplify my question... Do you think my computer would benefit with such an upgrade with an older CPU? I occasionally game and would like to future proof it as at times I do get around to playing the latest game. e.g. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

Thanks in advance,

Dominick

yup your cpu is a bit out dated. For games that require strong cpu you will have a bottleneck even with a gtx 970 but for games that is more gpu bound you will notice less bottleneck. It is worth upgrading your gpu to 970 but you will need a good and reliable 550w psu like EVGA or seasonic
