I have a rig (AMD fx 8350, gigabyte 970a, 8gb ballistix, 1tb hd) which dual boots windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Everything was working fine until a couple days ago when i rebooted to get into the ubuntu Os. Now when Ubuntu booted, it hung on the login screen, so i did a hard reset. When the rig came back up, it was stuck in grub rescue. using the ls command shows 5 partitions, but it cannot see any file systems in any of them. I then tried using a Windows recovery usb to rebuild the MBR and BCD, but it was not effective. The Windows command prompt however did recognize the windows parition on the drive, but i was missing 200gb(the Ubuntu partition). It looks like somehow I corrupted grub/ubuntu. I have tried using the boot repair disk, but it failed saying unable to contain a live file system. i had given up, so I went to reinstall ubuntu from scratch and I also get this error even when simply trying to run ubuntu from the usb drive. Not sure what is going on. If anybody has any advice I'd be happy to try some things. I would be ecstatic if i could recover my windows partition.
