Hey there, NikkiAngela!

I'd suggest to try plugging the external in a different USB port on your Mac. You can even try with a different USB cable if you have a spare, just to see if it will get it recognized. Can you please tell does it show in Disk Utility on your Mac?
Here's a link that will explain how to get there: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=qRpTej
If you do see it (on the left), I'd suggest to select it and then click on Repair Disk (on the right).

Hope this was helpful! Keep me posted! :)

I had a brand new WD 5TB external drive which after formatted to exFAT on PC refused to mount on OSX. I tried to re-format to exFAT, repair, first aid etc. It kept saying "...could not be mounted". I found that after I re-formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) it mounted, and after this I could format to exFAT again and now it would mount and work fine as an exFAT drive.

Side note: I use my drives between PC and Mac, and I find that when I format to exFAT on the PC, OSX won't read it, but when I format to exFAT from OSX, it works fins across both platforms.
