I have a small history (not great) of using linux on devices before and finding either unsatisfactory performance or the device that the OS is being installed on simply not working with linux.

The laptop is a HP Pavilion 15-N267SA, and I use it as my personal laptop for school, social media and web browsing.

I also can't find the drivers from HP so I would not be able to re-install windows should it all go horribly wrong. :/

Would you say I had better just stick with Windows 8.1? (I can't stand it)

Solution
It's more than good enough to run any Linux distro edition but if you had unsatisfacory experiences with Linux in the past, this time may not be different... therefore I would seriously not recommend you going through with it. I have tried many different Linux distros and they work just the same installed as from the Live CD, so why not just burn one and run it live!... In my experience Linux is boring and not easy to configure, install or do anything that's easily done on Windows. If the Windows 8.1 interface is part of what makes you not stand it, why not install a better start menu like Classic Shell to improve the appearance and disable all the apps, gadgets and side bars that in my experience make Windows 8 /8.1 so boring and disfuctional. Classic Shell can make it look and run exactly like Windows 7 except for the small difference in the Windows Explorer toolbars but other than that, you can install different themes and wallpapers to make it look like Windows 7 or even XP.
