Pentium processor vs intel core i5?

Im getting a new pc. The person who is getting the parts for me is recommending either an Intel Pentium G3440 3.30GHz (Haswell) at £55 or an Intel Core i5-4690 3.50GHz (Haswell) at £179. He is not recommending the i3 because it is very similar to the pentium and the only real difference is "hyperthreading" which only affects certain applications.

So does anyone have any recommendations on what I would choose? How would it play Sims 3, first person shooter games, strategy games (eg command and conquer, dawn of war), run applications, browse the internet etc.

What specifically the games you wanted to play?

1. Far cry 4 (ultra settings)
2. Battle Field 4 (ultra settings)
3. Assassin`s creed Unity (ultra settings)
4. Call of Duty Advance Warfare (ultra settings)

If you will play those games above, then get i5 with GTX 970. If not get the i3 or G3258 or X4 860k.

Passmark scores the G3440 at 3379 and the i5-4690 at 7618. If you can afford the i5 then do it as the performance will be much better.

Thanks for all your help guys. I have discussed this with the person building my I think pc. He agrees with all your responses, we are getting an i5 4690 with 4 gb ram and nvidia gtx 750.

Your RAM will be limiting you. That processor is overkill for that GPU too.

The i5 is great, but not if it's going to limit the rest of your system. I would get an i3, 8GB of RAM, and then a nicer graphics card instead.
