Hi,

My hard drive I think has failed and I can no longer boot the computer into Windows 7. The logo appears and attempts to boot, but then the pc restarts and does the same thing again and again.
Is there a way of retrieving files and data from the hard drive seeing that I cannot properly boot the PC?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

I would recommend doing Windows Start Up Repair as most issues with boots can be solved by using that utility.

How to run Start Up Repair:

1. When you power on your computer, Press F8 repeatedly until a screen saying "Advanced Start Up Options" or something like that.

Tip: If it asks you to select an operating system, Press "Windows 7"

2. Use your computer arrow keys to navigate to "Repair Your Computer"

3. Wait for computer to start up the Recovery tools. If it asks you for an Admin user and password, enter it now.

4. Select "Windows 7" if prompted. Once a list of options have popped up, select "Start Up Repair" and follow the instructions.

Once the finished screen pops up, select "Click here for diagnostic and repair...

Does your hard drive click, or beep? If beeping, then the heads are stuck on the platters, and all you have to do is open up the drives, and move the heads off the platters manually. If clicking, then the drive's circuit board has gone bad, and you will have to change the circuit board. Changing the circuit board is easy, unfortunately, you will also have to move the bad board's BIOS chip from the bad board to the new/working board, and this job will require more than just a screwdriver. I just learned all this about the circuit board, because one of my WD portable hard drives is not detecting, and it clicks a few times before stopping.

Once the finished screen pops up, select "Click here for diagnostic and repair details" and TAKE A PICTIRE OR WRITE THE DETAILS DOWN. Copy and pasting WILL NOT work.

Many thanks,
Tomas

I agree with Tomas Windows 7 startup repair is the best option for windows booting errors. Although, I would like to add I have had better luck using startup repair with a Windows 7 Installation disc.
