Internal Hard Drive became RAW

Hello, I have a brand new computer build with a Hitachi Ultrastar 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive. It has recently changed to RAW and I am unable to install my operating system on it. When trying to install Windows 8, I get to where I would like to save the OS on, however no disk drives appear. When I attempt to load drivers, I can see Local Disk (C: ) is still there and there is an option to format it however I get the error message "Windows can't format C." Likewise, chkdsk in the command prompt yields nothing. I personally only have a complementary laptop but I live in a dorm so finding someone else to hook the HDD is probably possible and I have a 2 year-protection plan on it from Amazon so returning it is not preferred, but also not a problem.

That's not good at all. It sounds like you drive might be defective, judging by the results from the tests. Having in mind your laptop is brand new, if I were you I'd contact the customer support of the reseller and inquire about the issue. They should provide you with further assistance on how to proceed.

Good luck mate. I hope everything turns out fine.
Hey Jmelahman. If you say that it wouldn't be a big problem for you to try it with another computer, I'd recommend that you do that. Connect it either internally or externally and run the manufacturer's diagnostic tool to test the drive with it and see if there are any error. If everything turns out to be fine, I'd suggest that you format it while connected to the other PC and try again to see if the same thing happens.

Hope that helps.

Hi Boogieman, thanks for such a timely response! Will I need to download something like this: http://ibm-hitachi-drive-fitness-test.en.softonic.com/ or is there some sort of disgnostic tool built into the HDD itself?

Yep, you'll need to download a diagnostic tool, you could use either the manufacturer's or a 3rd party diagnostic tool. In both cases I'd recommend that you use the tool manufacturer's website to download it, e.g. like in your case, this would be Hitachi's website. Take a look in the support and dowloads sections, there should be an HDD diagnostic tool there.

Okay, so I burnt the Universal Boot CD to a dvd and loaded it on my computer and ran the DTF diagnostic. First thing that was fishy is it had the right device name for my HDD, but the capacity was only 34gb even though it's a 1tb drive. Second, when running the the quick test, I am getting the error "0x73 - Defective Drive. Excessive Shock" and when I run advanced test I get "0x72 - Defective Drive. S.M.A.R.T. Failure."
The hard drive is still in my computer so I have not tried to format yet.

Not sure if this is bumping, but if it is, I apologize.
So I managed to use Darik's boot and nuke to wipe my hard drive and managed to restore what appears to be the 30GB or so part of the hard drive that appeared in the DFT. I have installed my OS onto the drive (I'm on posting from the computer actually :) ). I read on another post that posting a snapshot of the disk management screen could be useful so: http://i.imgur.com/35bYcBl.png. Any ideas on how to get the remaining 970GBs back now? lol
