I have an MSI Z97 pc mate and the Intel G3258. I've read so many guides on how to overclock that I'm getting a bit overwhelmed especially since many of them seem contradictory and/or don't offer the same information. I am having trouble understanding what to do with the Ring and Ring voltage options in the BIOS. Up to this point I have CPU at 4.7 CPU voltage at 1.3 and i was going to start walking down the voltage. Then I saw a tutorial that said I should keep the Ring/Uncore at 0.1 under the CPU setting and another said to be 0.3 under the CPU. Which is correct? Or do i just leave Ring and Ring voltage alone on the auto setting which is at 3200?

Solution
Ring or Cache overclocking is completely optional. I just read about it and overclocking the cache is only good for memory intensive apps. If you just want to overclock just the cpu then you can leave it alone.

1.3 is a little much for a g3258, try lowering it to 1.275 if you can.

Well I want to be able to play games at the medium to high settings (witcher, Bioshock, Dark Souls) So would the ring need to be changed for that?

I haven't started walking the voltage back down yet but with the cooler going the temp stays at around 60C under full load on prime95.

Nah, gaming isn't really memory intensive. Only intensive part of it would be the GPU and vram.
