I'm currently using a five hundred dollar iBuyPower prebuilt PC as my gaming computer, but I've found it to be a bit lacking after a while. I cannot run some of the more demanding games like ARMA 3, Planetside, and heavily modded Minecraft/Skyrim at anything above 15-20fps. I've asked around this website on how to build an entirely new PC, but I've found that it would likely be cheaper and easier to upgrade the one I have rather than start from the ground up. I'm not too knowledgeable on a computer's main components and which ones are vital to improving performance, so please tell me if I am leaving anything out of my specifications.

These are my specs:
CPU: AMD FX(tm)-6100 Six-Core Processor
GPU: NVDIA GeForce GT 610
Memory: 8GB RAM
OS: Microsoft 8.1

Assuming my budget is around $400-500 for an upgrade, what parts would I need to replace to improve gaming performance to the point of being able to run highly demanding games at medium to high graphics settings? And what are the best parts within the budget to use?

Solution
Then you should get an fx-8320, a new PSU (650w from Antec, XFX, seasonic), and then the best GPU you can get with the leftover money. Probably an r9 280 or 280x.
