I've formatted before and always saved my stuff on cd's and or flash drives is there an easier way for a novice to understand I'm using win 7 if that matters.

To transfer files you can drag the entire folder from one drive and drop it to an empty spot on the drive to which you are transferring.

...or are you talking about cloning/ghosting your entire drive?

Hi there backdrop001,

Just borrow a big external or internal(if you are using a desktop computer) drive from somebody, transfer your data, format your drive and transfer the data back. Keep in mind that you need to reinstall the programs as you can't transfer them as well.
Depending on how much data you have, I guess you can upload it to some cloud storage as well and download it after the format. Though, I would prefer the first option.

I have an idea you could try.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say you only have a single hard drive, right? Hey, we've all been there and done that. Back in the days when I only had a single hard drive... I just create Partitions. If you split your hard drive (1/3 OS side and 2/3 for the other partition).. you wouldn't have to worry about copying/backing up your data. You could look into doing that.

I have another suggesting... Why not just install a second hard drive into your computer? The cheapest route you could take is to go to Craigslist and looking for a used hard drive. Just open up your computer to verify it's a SATA drive... and look for one there... then you could have a good backup in case your main hard drive ever completely fails on you.
