I've formatted before and always saved my stuff on cd's and or flash drives is there an easier way for a novice to understand I'm using win 7 if that matters.

well...
for backup
- nope - you have to use a different drive /like usb travel drive/

for the future:
- you can add another drive to your system to store your stuff on /so it doesn't get formatted/
- or you can split your drive into several partitions /so you can format only one of them/
/i like to have 2 drives/partitions - one for system, programs and games; other for documents, music, etc.../
