FPS Issues (especially in WoW) with GTX980 - possible bottleneck

Hello there!

I recently upgraded from my old HD5870 to a GTX980 and, while I'm pretty statisfied with the result in some other games, I'm pretty disappointed with my performance in WoW.
I know that a WoW specific question would be better suited for the WoW forums but it's also about synergy between my GPU and the rest of my rig.

My complete specs are
MB: Gigabyte X58A-UD3R
RAM: 6GB
CPU: Intel i7 950 @ 3.07
GPU: GTX980
Storage: 120GB SSD but mostly playing on my old 1TB HDD because my SSD seems to have some hiccups causing freezing and I'm planning on getting a new one soon

My FPS in WoW (playing on a fresh and clean Win7 x64 install) @1920x1080 with settings on Ultra is usually between 30 and 50 in newer areas of the game (which are graphically more advanced). In Raids (playing with a huge number of other players) it usually hovers at around 25 or 35 depending on the environment (outside/inside).
This is not really the result I was hoping for.

My question would be: Is this the most I can get out of my 980? Probably not.
Is it an optimization issue with WoW itself? Again I don't really think so.
I know that WoW is a pretty CPU heavy game (especially when it comes to playing with a lot of other players) so I'm suspecting it's either my motherboard or my CPU that's bottlenecking the 980 but I'm not really tech-savvy enough to determine what exactly it is. Is this realistic though?

I will probably build a new rig soon. Needless to say I'm planning on reusing that 980.
But first I'd like to hear some opinions on whether a new MoBo and CPU are likely to give me a rather huge performance boost - especially in WoW but also in general.

Thank you for reading this and for any possible answers.

I do know that WoW has some performance issues at the moment. Thats one of the reasons i currently stopped playing. Anyway, with a 980 and i7-950 you should easily be able to max out WoW. Could you maybe check your memory usage and CPU usage while playing? Also what FPS do you get in older area's?

Thanks for your reply!

In older Areas like (Mists of) Pandaria it's a little bit higher at like 50-70 but there are usually no other players around.

Right now sitting in my Garrison my FPS is at 41-46, 4.6 GB out of 6 GB Ram are used, 1.8 GB by WoW.
Overall CPU Usage is at 25%. CPU0 is at 55%, CPU1 is usually at 0% but spikes to 20 and 30%, CPU2 is at 55%, CPU3 is 0% with no spikes, CPU4 is at 60%, CPU5 0%, CPU6 between 50 and 60%, CPU7 between 0 and 10%.

What latency do you have ? (MS). Your Ram usage and CPU usage seem kinda normal. You might also want to try a different anti aliasing? I heard Blizzard changed it or something.

My latency is around 35 and 40 ms most of the time.
Changing the Anti-Aliasing setting doesn't seem to have a noticable impact. I usually use CMAA because that's what Nvidia Gforce Experience recommends. Switching to FXAA gives me like 2 FPS more while disabling AA doesn't seem to impact framerate at all when compared to FXAA.

Thanks for your help. I was familiar with most of the stuff in those articles. Of course I can lower some demanding settings here and there but that only gains me like 8 FPS combined which still doesn't get me to 60FPS even in not crowded areas. In order to get to a steady 60 FPS+ I have to go down to the point where the game doesn't really look any good to me anymore and that strikes me as odd.

The only thing new to me was the "SET processAffinityMask XX" setting to manually assign cores to WoW but that doesn't seem to have any noticeable effect.

Than im sorry, i can't help you. You could speak to a Blizzard employee, they might be able to help you. You can write a ticket. Or ask for a live chat.

I appreciate your help anyways.

I just spoke to a GM about my issue and he thinks that everything points to a driver issue that might or might not get resolved soon by Nvidia or might be fixed by Blizzard in an upcoming patch. Well.. That's probably what I expected.

Could be the cause, hope it will be solved for you.
