I'm sorry if this is the wrong thread, but the home audio thread didn't seem to fit.

So, I'm building a desktop PC and I want to use my HDTV for a dedicated monitor. I'm planning on using a dedicated soundcard for the system; how exactly can I set up my system such that the on board speakers of my TV are used for sound vs. buying a set of computer speakers.

Possibly extraneous information:
-I will be using a dedicated video card (not the intergrated MOBO graphics) via an HDMI cable to the TV.
-I have a pair of Razer Tiamat analog 7.1 headset that I use for gaming. Again, I'd like to use my HDTV speakers for casual use, but I don't want to annoy my neighbors, so I have the headset.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. If I posted this in the wrong area, let me know and I will move it.

Solution
yup, it will. i've run it from one of my cards before deciding to run VGA instead (and then i'm running VGA from the card and audio from onboard)

a few thoughts, pointing in various directions

* HDTV via HDMI as main screen is going to be annoying. that combo tends to do nasty things to text and display size.

* HDMI carries audio, so if you want to use TV speakers you don't need to do anything - just connect and go. that's the whole point of HDMI cables.

* i hope your TV is 1080p and not just 720p. with a screen that big you'll need to be far away for things to look acceptable.

* i use a 40" HDTV as an aux monitor and connect to it using VGA plus analog audio cable. it's more than enough for 1080p and avoids "i'm a tv, let me force your card into settings MY way"

I'm used to connecting a laptop to HDTV's via HDMI's for gaming, so I'm used to what it does to text and display. It is a full 1080p HDTV, but does not have VGA capabilities. Either complete analog video/audio or HDMI (unless you know of a video card that outputs using TV cable).

My only question with the HDMI also running audio, is that the dedicated video card has it's own HDMI port on it. Will this also transmit sound?
