About a day ago my desktop started to shut off randomly. After checking the CPU temperature in the bios i found the CPU temperature would hit 90c and shutoff in about five minutes of just leaving it idle in the bios status screen. The CPU fan would be running at around 950 - 985 rpm during this time. I'm assuming that the issue is with the CPU fan but thought it couldn't hurt to see if anyone else had any ideas as to what could be causing it.

Most likely one of the push-pins on at least one corner of your stock cooler has popped loose. You can troubleshoot this problem by firmly pushing on each corner of the cooler for about 20 seconds while watching the temperature. When you see the temperature drop significantly, you've found the loose push-pin.

it could be that your heatsink is not properly seated, so no matter how fast the fan runs your CPU is not getting cooler.

Take off your heatsink, clean off the thermal paste with isopropyl alcohol, and reapply. Reseat the heatsink, check temps.
