I'm mostly concerned with something that will last me a very long time. According to this, Hitachi seems to be the best bet, but I've also heard/seen many personal anecdotes that seem to favor WD and sometimes Seagate, so I'm a bit confused and figured I'd just ask outright. What should I go with?

I think the WD Caviar Black is the best 2tb hdd. It also has the longest or one of the longest warranty's of any hdd (5 years).

I've never really ever had a decent seagate hdd, but I know others have had no issues. Hitachi hdd's that have come in pre-built desktops/laptops have served me and my family well over the past decade or so.

I've had this for a couple of months now and the speed (and $/TB) is spectacular! I know I can't speak for reliability just yet, but I did get it because of the good reviews and warranty.

Edit:

Also check this out, in case you want to go to higher capacities

Hi there therainmaker,

WD Black will be a good choice as it is considered to be a reliable one due to its 5 years of limited warranty as fudoka711 already suggested. Though, keep in mind that HDDs have lots of moving physical parts inside them, so no one can tell you for sure what the lifespan of your HDD will be.
WD’s drive reliability is measured using Component Design Life (CDL) and Annualized Failure Rate (AFR). The Component Design Life of the drive is 5 years and the Annualized Failure Rate is less than 0.8%.

Manufacturers of Hard Disks lie through their teeth about HDD failure rates.
If you do not want your drive to fail you pay. You buy an enterprise class\data centre HDD.
Designed for 24/7 use. Very high tolerance components. Probably a 5 year warranty ...
probably 2 million hours MTBF. Probably costs 2x to 3x your average desktop HDD.

It is all here.

Happy reading.
