I recently had hard drive boot problems. I was also under the impression (through a lot of annoying crappy googling) that repairing Windows through the install disk, would erase said drive. (Seriously. go ask Google, it won't give you any friggin related webpages) So what I wanted to do was go through and take whatever files I needed off it before repairing it. In my infinite wisdom, I just changed the ownership of the entire drive and all its subfolders to me (in a different windows that I installed on another hard drive that is now formatted) so I could access all the files from another Windows. After repairing it and realizing it only took about a quarter of a second, and didn't change a damned thing on the disk, I was able to boot from the drive. Now here I am, wondering if having the ownership of 90% of my files set to a "Account Unknown(S-1-5-21-3636658566-2726506005-605861933-1001)" will leave my files vulnerable or something. Is there a way to set all the files' ownership back to what they were before? Or does it not really matter? Or am I SOL?
