Is the MSI GE60 2PE good for college/computer science?

Hi guys! So I'm going to university soon and I am in need of a new laptop. The MSI GE60 2PE (or the cheaper MSI GE60 2PL) seems like an awesome choice, however I am unsure if it is suitable for university. The weight does not necessarily bother me (yeah I lift a lot xD jks), however I am worried about the battery life of it as I would not like it to die on me while in a lecture.

I am using it for gaming, as well as for my course (computer science) in which I plan on dual booting windows 8 with linux. Some forums have said for students to just get Macbook Air/Pro as it is a Unix based OS and therefore suitable for programming, but I can also 'bootcamp' it to run windows if necessary. Also the fact that they are solid built, light and have great battery life are reasons why I am considering a Macbook, but I want to know what would be best suit for programming/computer science. I would like it to game too but university comes first so I'm willing to sacrifice it.

Could I also consider just building a PC? I already have a laptop but its not very good (sometimes it lags just typing xD) which I plan on selling to a family member cos they want a laptop just for web browsing and typing documents and stuff.

Well I guess what I'm asking is, will the MSI GE60 2PE or 2PL be good for university? Thanks :)

It's an awesome laptop and very capable at gaming. Obviously I'd expect it to be quite cumbersome compared to a more compact office use laptop. I think you would be fine programming on it. Probably end up buying an external keyboard as typing on laptops is often horrible!

You could always run it on low performance/energy saver mode when you/re in a lecture I'm sure it will last a good 3 hours at least if you're just taking notes.

For Linux, you could also just virtualise it by running virtualbox etc and installing a linux ISO. This way you can just boot up a Linux OS that sits in your Windows session so you have access to both without needing to reboot and switch boot partition.

Macbook Pro's are capable gaming machines to an extent...

Macbook Pro's are capable gaming machines to an extent but will not come near to an MSI GE60 especially in terms of bang for buck. Mac's are well designed but very overpriced in my opinion!

Thanks for your answer! I find it informative, however I myself have have decided not to go with that laptop due to its lack of battery life and its bulk for carrying around at Uni (not the weight, cos I lift xD nah but its pretty big to fit into my bag). I was wondering if you knew of any laptop that was fairly light, good build and could play tf2 and csgo at 60fps (any settings)?
Thank you for your answer again!

I own the MSI GE60, and I carry it around campus and find that it is not an issue, and battery life is enough for me, at 2.5-3.5 hours, depending on your settings. That said, if you are looking for "thin and light" gaming notebooks, I would highly recommend the MSI GS series. They are incredible small for the specs, and are very high quality, without completely breaking the bank. I would recommend you take a look at the MSI GS60 :)

Thanks for that recommendation and I will definitely look into it! I've heard of the MSI GS60 but $2000AUD is starting to get out of my price range, and which MSI GE60 do you have? The Apache pro or the 2PL? Is that 2.5-3.5 hours light usage or while gaming?

I have been looking into another laptop, GIGABYTE P34G V2, supposed to be good but I'm not sure. Really slim, 1.7kg, gtx 860m, i7, 6-7.5 battery life light usage, and cheaper than the apache pro here in Australia!
