Hi, Long time lurker first time poster

I'm looking for a 4 bay NAS drive which are fairly easy to find but specifically I'm looking for one where I can power on/off each drive as a couple of the drives I would not need to be on constantly, which seems like a waste of power and lifespan to me so wondering if anybody here could help me with my search. Thanks.

most "green" drives (HDD) will power down / stop spinning when they're not being used, which is what you're looking for. benefit is you are totally hands-off so the drive spins down when not needed and powers on when you need it. no need to remember to flick a switch on or off. automagic! as long as you're not going a RAID, any green drive will be fine.

so, buy any 4-bay NAS box and fill it with green drives, and avoid RAID.

Green drive sound value, but pay the extra for Red WD. Green drives go spastic when applied to multidrive volumes, cause they never sync up perfectly and will fail. Also if you really care about data security at this level, you should go with recommended drives by the NAS manufacture. HGST brand drives are the hot tip. Google "best drives for NAS" to get the best advice. 6TB WD Red looks nice, and is there Red Pro?
Drive on/off power settings and the like are all waiting for you in the mature and friendly NAS operating systems. Personally I like Synology brand is best, cause it goes way faster than QNAP and a little cheaper and popular. QNAP is the brand I trust with network administration and build quality. I would not hesitate on the many other brand either. Secret, do your homework. Tip, Synology DS-414j is the minimum specification, lowest price empty NAS that I would buy and be happy with.

Do not hesitate and buy a NAS cause they are super cool, and without them you wont be able to scale up your data security, file administration and grooming. Discloser, I own a Synology DS413j and a QNAP 421, outfitted with 4TB WD Reds. For simplicity I recommend single drive volumes. Save RAID for people who know the penalties and also pay the extra for a better NAS. Also buy the best you can afford. You wont regret. Promise.
