Is the 4790k worth it for gaming and rendering or should i go with the 4690k? And what mono should i get for under 140

The i5 has 6mb of cache and i7 8mb. Also the i7 has hyperthreading which is a more effective way of the i7 scheduling tasks i dont think it makes a difference. And of course teh clock speeds which u can oc to just about even around 4.7 on the i7 and 4.6 on the i5 but some chips do better of worse.

If u mostly game get the i5.
i7 worth it for gaming: no, for rendering: yes.

You could always go in the middle and get an E3 Xeon which is just above the price of an i5 but has hyperthreading like an i7. You will need a dedicated gpu but since you are gaming I would assume you are using dedicated graphics.

A i7-4790k gives you a guaranteed high clockrate. The all cores turbo is 4.2GHz and the dual core turbo is 4.4GHz even if you run it at stock. It's a better binned chip that the i5-4690k, which is only guaranteed to hit 3.9GHz. With that said, most 4690k's seem to be able to hit 4.5GHz or so with decent cooling based on what I have read from people who have them. I do think hyperthreading is worth it for games. There are some games like Dragon Age Inquisition, Crysis 3, Watchdogs, Battlefield 4, and a couple others I can't recall right now that perform better on i7 vs i5 at the same clockspeed thanks to the extra virtual cores. I personally find HT a worthy investment (which is why I got a Xeon E3-1231v3), since games are written to be optimized for 8-core consoles and since comparing gaming performance for an i3 vs an overclocked Pentium shows that hyperthreading can make a significant difference for gaming.
