Ok so i'm planning on getting a new GPU (in title) when i have the money. After looking up reviews and comparisons i've decided i'd like to go with the R9 290 Vapor-X, but then realised that the 305mm card won't fit in my case (290mm max according to their site).

Then after more searching i've come up with a possible solution, which unfortunately means cutting part of my case off which is why i want help/suggestions before i buy a card that might not fit and cutting my case to bits.

Ok so the card MIGHT, just about fit in the case... as you can see in picture 2, the HDD bay has a support on the left. Then it actually dips in a bit which would give the GPU a bit more space, but still it's kind of risky as i'd be spending about £250 on a GPU. So i thought what if i cut out some HDD slots? They don't seem to hard to do (my dad has decent tools). I can't cut out the top slot(s) as in pic 2 you can see the GPU would still hit the top section of the bay above for the dvd/more HDD space. I currently have 1 HDD in the top and one below for some reason... i'd probably move them both down to the bottom section (also one is in wonky because i'm dumb... but i know how to fix that now).

So i was thinking, i could move the GPU into a lower slot (i'm not certain but i think there are 3 slots for gpu?), pic 3 shows that best. Then with the gpu in slot 2, i could cut out HDD slot 2 and 3 which should mean the extra space (few cm) could extend into there.

So yea, does this seem like it would work, and does it seem like a good option? If i do it i'd have 4 HDD slots and there are still some in the top so i'm not worried about that. But would cutting it out make my case weaker or is that support just for the actual HDD's? And would the GPU extending into there cause heat for my HDD's or is there not enough of it to make a difference? I could also just buy a case that fits but i don't have a job right now so that's not really an option. I'm working for my dad when i can to get the GPU.

Solution
huuuuhhhh.... however... there's actually a note about it :(

"(Note 3) For optimum performance, if only one PCI Express graphics card is to be installed, be sure to install it in the PCIEX16_1 slot; if you are installing two PCI Express graphics cards, it is recommended that you install them in the PCIEX16_1 and PCIEX16_2 slots."

The real question would be... how much performance decrease it would be :(

What's your MoBo model?... that will tell you if you can move the card to the other slots... provided they are all 16X. If they are 8X or 4X you will have reduced performance (I am not even sure if you can run a GPU in a 4X slot)

Chances are, only the first slot may be 16X and the second/third work at 8X for sli/crossfire

Ahhh right, hmm that could be an issue :/

I don't think you would lose much performance at all.

I've been looking around and it seems that putting it in the second slot can make it like 40% less performance :/ not always, but i think i might just go with a new case. Sucks because that's an extra £80 but at least this way i can sell my current case. Thanks for your help anyway
