Hello All,

I have recently upgraded my old machine. The specs are as follows:

AMD FX 6300 CPU
ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3 MoBo
Corsair 4GB DDR3 RAM
400W PSU
2 HDD (80gb and 640gb)

Its a dual boot machine with both OS installed on the 80gig drive. I have installed Ubuntu 14.04 and Windows 8 64bit in it.

No overclocking has been performed. The temp was in control for 2-3 months but recently I am noticing issue with my Western Digital internal drive (640GB). Its getting disconnected often when the machine is used for sometime (say 1hr). Then I have to just re-plug the SATA cable or power cable and it re-appears on reboot. Both HDDs are getting heated at a good amount.

80 gigs is working fine and has been there for around 10 years and no issues faced.
Have ran check disk on WD and no issues found. As of now, I have moved the datas from 640 HDD to my external and will require some advise on how to proceed further before I copy them back?

I have thought of getting a cabinet cooler but wil wait for suggestions as the drives were working fine before, so if its due to some other issues, I can get the drive replaced.

Thanks in advance

You are most welcome. :)
Just to be on the safe side, give it a go with the DLG tests, to make sure that everything's OK with the drive and post the results here if you think there's anything alarming. Also, please remove the Serial Numbers of the drives from the thread, for security reasons - I assume you don't want anyone taking advantage of your drive's warranty. ;)

Hay man! Just something that I experienced a few days ago. My 1 harddrive gave problems, disappearing from bios (and my computer) and then reappearing when I removed the cable and replugged it. ANyways, I ran thorough tests, tried formatting, drivers, update firmware, etc.

After basically getting ready to discard my drive, I checked the SATA cable and it seemed to be at fault. Replaced it and all is working well. It could be something to consider in your situation as well. Hope you struggle less than I did! Goodluck!

Hey Surfermj. I'm sorry to hear you're having such issues with your drive. The temperature is indeed a bit high, but everything should be OK as long as it's under 60°C. First of all, you did well by backing up the important data from that drive. Then I'd go with @Pc-Pete's suggestion. This is the first thing you should check, try the drive with another computer or with a different SATA and/or power connection to see if the same thing happens. If you get it to work properly I'd recommend that you download DLG (Data Lifeguard Diagnostic) and run both tests (Quick and Extended) to see if there's anything alarming concerning the drive: DLG.

Hope that helps. Let me know how everything goes.
