To begin, my computer is running Windows 7 home premium 64 bit, with Microsoft security essentials as my antivirus program.

Earlier today, I had noticed that 15 updates were released today (2/10/2015) and went to install them, as was recommended by windows update. This was done by having the updates download, and then install before shutdown. During this process, the 8th update (I don't know the exact update it would have been) faulted, and took 45 minutes to install - after which time I shut the computer down and restarted it.

After restart, I was able to verify that the first 7 updates installed correctly, and checked for more updates to see if I could install the rest. I noticed that 7 further updates were recommended, so I chose to install them. I don't know why this wasn't 8, as it would have been before - because only 7 updates installed properly, so 8 should be left, including the update that caused the error.

I installed those updates without issue. However, upon looking in event viewer, I noticed this error logged:

Event 2001, Microsoft Antimalware

Microsoft Antimalware has encountered an error trying to update signatures.
New Signature Version:
Previous Signature Version: 1.191.4435.0
Update Source: Microsoft Update Server
Update Stage: Download
Source Path: http://www.microsoft.com
Signature Type: AntiVirus
Update Type: Full
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Current Engine Version:
Previous Engine Version: 1.1.11302.0
Error code: 0x80240016
Error description: An unexpected problem occurred while checking for updates. For information on installing or troubleshooting updates, see Help and Support.

This update has been logged six times tonight; 3 at the shutdown before I tried to install updates, and 3 at the reboot after all updates were installed. I also noticed these errors, as well:

Event 7006, Service Control Center

The ScRegSetValueExW call failed for Start with the following error:
Access is denied.

and

Event 7006, Service Control Center

The ScRegSetValueExW call failed for FailureCommand with the following error:
Access is denied.

I got these two errors once per each reboot, with both errors being logged at the same time.

I've run a virus scan with MSE, and found no issues.

Googling around, I have determined that these are not good signs, and might be indicative of malware or something very wrong with my computer - though I have not noticed anything acting oddly. What should I do to determine if I have any issues, and fix them? As a quick recap, none of these errors have been logged before on this system; they have only ever happened after one of the updates released today (2/10/2015) failed installation.

Thank you for your time.

As an append to the information above, I've found a folder in my root directory (c: ) that is named a very long string of letters and numbers; based on the contents, virus scans (with malwarebytes and MSE), and information I've found on the internet, I've determined that it's a left over from the update process.

I can't seem to find info beyond that. Could this folder be what's causing the error messages? It was created around when windows update hanged

One of the updates released on 2/10/2015 was broken, and it caused the issues that I was experiencing. The updates released today fixed all the issues and error messages, and everything seems to be in working order.
