I'm been considering a PC build for months now, however budget has always been a stumbling block as I'm only a teenager.

I've had an offer from a reputable seller to buy an AMD FX-6100 and MSI 990FXA-GD80 for £70.
This is a reputable seller as his account is over two years old with thousands of posts so there's no worries there.

I know the FX-6100 is a little old and not massively well reviewed but it would probably be fine for what I want which is just a basic gaming PC to play games at medium settings 1080p and watch videos.

I personally think this is a good deal considering the MOBO sells for around £100 when new. I'm planning on teaming this up with something like an R9 270x. The CPU and motherboard have only had a few months of use and have never been overclocked. The CPU has been used with water cooling and is only 4 months old so it's going to be in perfect condition. I've seen pictures and verified them so I know it's legit.

What are your thoughts on this deal? Would you recommend this deal? It seems almost too good to be true.

i would get it in your case. at a low budget anything that drops the price is worth considering. paired with a 270x, the cpu will play games fine. there will be a lot of intel fanboy dribble about it being unable to play games but that is just crazy talk. it outperformed the q6600 when it came out and that cpu still games very well. so there is no reason to say that a cpu that beat it is somehow unable to game.

you should be good to go on a pretty low budget with this deal you found.

I would probably only need a tower build as I can pick up cheap peripherals, 1080p monitor and Windows 7 elsewhere.

This would probably be my build so far:

People talk a lot about bottlenecks and I know the existence of bottlenecks is more than a marketing trick than anything else but I'd prefer if my CPU didn't hold back my build too much. As the mobo is AM3+ anyway so I could always upgrade to an FX-6300 or FX-8320 in the future if I wanted.

bottlenecks really happen but from what i have seen they are most pronounced when pairing old cpu's with very high end gpu's. i somehow doubt you're going to all of a sudden want sli 980's in a month so i would not really worry about bottlenecking at this point. you are aware of the age of the cpu and don't expect new $1000 performance form it so i'd say it's good. trouble comes when folks expect high end performance from old/cheap parts.

you cna compare that cpu to a new one but that is just not fair nor appropriate. overall, it should be good enough for a first time, low budget build. you can upgrade as you go and can save like you noted. plenty of life left in the am3+ with the 6300 and 83** cpu's for another couple years before it has to be scrapped and rebuilt completely.
