are the upcoming AMD carrizo mobile APUs a good choice for a $700-$800 laptop?

I heard about the new carrizo and carrizo L APUs. I plan on buying a laptop around the price ranger $700-$800 (preferably an A10 APU) for school work and light games like civ 5 and counter strike GO. Would any of you recommend these future APU laptops?

This unit with an i7 and Radeon R9 graphics is probably the best it's going to get near your price range. You'll have scrape together an extra hundred bucks or so, but it's well worth it. This unit will game most current titles at high to medium settings, some titles probably at ultra if they're less demanding titles. This deal probably won't be around forever though so I'd jump on it if you're interested. I don't see anything even close to this performance within about two hundred to three hundred bucks more.

It is however, only a 14" display, so if that's a deal breaker, I'm looking at a few other options for you.
Since they haven't been released yet, and there are no basis for comparison aside from prototype models which rarely offer a true preview of actual product releases, it's impossible for anybody to say on that. It's doubtful, at least at first, that you'll see many, if any, of the high end Carrizo equipped units under the 800 dollar mark that surpass the current performance of the A10 units with Radeon graphics. The Carrizo-L units probably fit that category but it's doubtful that any of the less expensive models are going to be heavyweights. Then again, as I said, it's impossible to say until we see the data.

For light gaming and school work, any of the current A8 or A10 APUs would probably be fine. Are you looking towards 15" or 17"? 768 or 1080 resolution?

Do you require it to have an SSD or is a 7200RPM hard drive sufficient?

Although it is impossible to really know AMD claims they will be 30% faster. I am looking for an A10 laptop 5400 or 7200 rpm HD no ssd needed. I also want 1080p. What i've noticed is there are very few 15" 1080p A10 laptops of the current generation APUs which is a bit worrying for me.

You're going to need a little more GPU power for 1080p than for 720p. Regardless I would avoid the 5400 laptops, using a drive that slow tends to be asking for trouble.

Yes there are some good 5400 drives that aren't too slow but no one uses them.... so it's best to just go for the 7200.

ANY AMD APU is capable of 1080p HD video and 1080p light to medium gaming. Most laptops have 5400 RPM drives due to the increased heat that's created by 7200 RPM drives. In some cases, installing a 7200 RPM drive in a configuration where the cooling system was tightly balanced to only be adequate for a 5400 RPM power saving drive, is enough to push it over the edge into overheating territory or cause the fans to run so much that battery life is non-existent. Thus, SSD is the way to upgrade, as it DECREASES internal heat as well as increasing drive access speeds dramatically. Just my 2cents but those are the facts.

It remains to be seen if AMD is going to perform int the 980M range. I think it's worth waiting to see because they may well be able to trade blows. That said Intel is probably the better choice for thermal reasons.
