Hi to start of with im new to this site and im a novice or noob you can say when it comes to computer's so take it easy on me, thanks, well to get to the question i have a nividia nforce 680i sli spp mobo/motherboard, it has a LGA 775 socket now here's my problem i want to upgrade my cpu/processor to a better one, right now i have a core 2 extreme qx 6700 which is good but doesnt have enough for what i want to do, now i looked at the site my motherboard is on which is http://www.nvidia.com/object/designed_by_nvidia_680i_lt_sli.html and it says it's compatible with these different cpu/processors's also if it matter my rig is water cooled.

Core 2 Extreme
(dual and quad core)
Core 2 Quad
Core 2 Duo
Celeron D
Pentium 4
Pentium D 9XX
Pentium D 8XX

now im looking into the core 2 extreme cpu's and i found two different one that i like and will be better then the one i have, my question is will any core 2 extreme cpu work with my mobo/motherboard or is it only certain one's in that series, because im looking at the intel core 2 extreme qx6850 cpu and the Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9770 the 9770 is much better the the 6850 but what i want to know is which one will work and if i am completely wrong in all of this what will work thats better the the 6700? thanks for reading

No. It is not compatible with all socket 775 cpus. there are several core 2 duo and core 2 quads that will not work with that chipset(mainly the last 2 generations of the core 2s). It being an OEM Alienware board makes compatibility even harder to discern as most oems dont release a list of supported cpu's. More than likely the qx6850 is the fastest quad it will support and unless you can find one real cheap the upgrade wouldn't be worth the cost. even on ebay the ones that don't look like they have gone through hell are going for ~$100 which is not worth the cost.
