Serious desktop issues. Windows keep crashing

Hey everyone.

I'm not sure where to start. I've had this problem for over a year now and I don't know what to do.

It all started when I moved my hardware into a new case. It seemed to be a hard disk issue at first. My system would start stuttering (mouse would be a bit spazzy on movement, sound would have pops and keyboard keystrokes would either stay "pressed" too long or not register). After this I'd get a blue screen with Windows saying something went wrong, it's gathering info and will restart.

After that it would just stay stuck there. If i rebooted the machine manually sometimes it would boot ok but others it would be something along the lines of "please wait checking disk for errors" and then it would never boot into windows again.

I've changed my original hard drive at first with a used SSD and it kept doing the same only this time it presented another symptom: the drive would inexplicably be filling up on GB even though I didn't download anything or install anything for a long time. Between 5min refreshes of the drive it would show around 5GB of data spontaneously appearing until the drive was completely full and then the previous issue I mentioned would occur.

If I was quick and rebooted the pc as soon as the stuttering started, it would then boot normally and would have no issues at first. After doing that for a while though I started noticing stuff like certain drivers not installing properly. I had a disk image made with Windows 8.1 that I would always restore but I've done fresh installs as well and the problem was always the same.

I was pretty sure it was the disk since my first one was a few years old and the second one was used so I bought a brand new one. After I installed windows I set the updates, drivers etc and then turned it off overnight to test in the morning (the usual test i do is I leave it playing music for like 10min on a fresh boot. Fresh boot is when the machine has been off for a few hours, like overnight.) and what happened was this: it got stuck, tried gathering its info in order to reboot but got stuck at 55% so I rebooted manually and now it works ok but I fear this will happen again and I need help from someone way more experienced.

My system specs are as follow:

CPU: i7 950 @3.07ghz
Motherboard: Asus ROG Rampage III Gene
Ram: 12gb (Corsair but i forget Mhz and model) 6x2gb
GPU: EVGA nVidia GTX680 2gb
HDD1: OCZ Arc 100 120gb
HDD1: WD 1TB (again I forget the very specifics)

If there's anything else I can provide that would help you help me figure this out just let me know.

Many thanks in advance!

Could be RAM problems. Have you removed them from their slots when migrated to new case? Have you grounded yourself when touching MB/RAM when you moved them? Run a mem. check. There is a good program called memtest86+ , it's free. See what it tells you.

Hey andre2b,
I didn't remove any of the ram and I also used a wristband for grounding myself while I was working on the computer.

I have done a memory test once and it came up clean but I will try the software you recommended as well once I get home.

Update:
Ok, I just finished the RAM test, everything checks out, no errors. I think I can rule out the SSD/HDD as being the culprit as well cause it's brand new.

Any further suggestions? Is there any software that can test the motherboard for any kind of errors?

As I mentioned earlier, I finished the memtest and everything is cool. I ran my pc again on a fresh boot and the sound started stuttering as usual. A reboot resolved this for the moment but the problem is still there it seems. Is there a possibility that it's something to do with Win8.1 and my rig? I don't know... =/

hmmm interesting. So it's not RAM, not HDD/SSD, not static damage to MB. I assume CPU was not touched and remains in a socket since when it all was fine. And a simple visual check of MB doesn't show any damage, and it's not shorting out in some funky way. Can't be GPU or wiring. Sorry mate, I am out of ideas.

Yeah, that was my next port of call, to try another OS. I've rechecked everything, even removed the GPU and refitted it, CPU was never bothered during the move-over or anything. I'll try booting with Linux or something in the morning, maybe install Windows 7 and see what happens.

Thanks for all your help so far! I'll keep you posted on what happens!

Ok, I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate as of last night. Same problem again: after I work it a little it starts slowly freezing up until it reaches the point where it's just not responding to anything and then a reboot "fixes" everything.

The system was making the USB connected/disconnected sound over and over on it's dying breath, I don't know if that means anything. My keyboard was also the first thing to go when it started freaking out again.

I'm stumped o_O;
