2560x1440 - Too much for one GTX 780?

Hi guys, I've got a question regarding my GPU. I picked up Evolve yesterday and even with the new drivers from Nvidia I'm only getting about 40fps on high with AA turned off. I'm not the most savvy when it comes to this sort of thing so I was wondering if this is purely because of my resolution or just the fact the game is poorly optimised? I'm pretty sure my card should be able to handle this game at 60 at 1080, but I don't have a 1080 screen to test it on unfortunately.

Does this mean in order to get a solid 60 frames on any new games at 1440 I'm going to need to get a second 780? I don't really fancy going back to 1080.

Cheers guys!

Is your 2600K overclocked? If not then pushing it up to 4.5 to 4.8 could make quite a difference (can't be sure
as I'm not familiar with Evolve's CPU/GPU balance behaviour).

Check reviews of the game, see how review sites find it behaves with different GPUs, then you can judge
whether your setup is performing as it should be. Also, said sites should have a CPU dependency test.

Note that you can always test 1080 with your setup for Evolve simply by choosing that resolution in your
display settings (or within the game if that's how it operates). The monitor will expand it to fill the screen.
That way, you can compare 1080 vs. 1440 on your monitor for this game.

Funny you bring this up because I was just reading something the other night that might help you out. As previously mentioned you should be able to use this information as comparison and compensate for your screen size. I would expect that the difference between the resolution you're playing at in FPS and the normal 1080p should be about half.

Oh and here is another site with some additional information including benchmarks with a 780 at the resolution you're gaming at. You'll need to translate the page though http://www.computerbase.de/2015-02/evolve-benchmarks-14-grafikkarten-im-vergleich/

I checked the Steam forums and it seems a lot of people with 780's are having problems with 1440 res, so I assume it's the game itself.

On a separate note, it seems that the only option I have in getting a second 780 is second hand now. Are there any particular sites in the UK that sell 2nd hand or refurbs? What sort of cover/warranty do I have if it ends up being borked?

Scan sometimes does, but I usually just use eBay.

Best thing is firstly to only consider bidding on items listed by those whose auctions are marked
with, "Returns accepted", though the return period is typically not that long, between 14 and 30
days. Some sellers have longer warranties, and if you're lucky with a normal seller like Scan then
it might be 6 months or a year. Either way though, it's always a bit of a risk buying 2nd-hand.
However, several dozens used GPUs I've bought, only a handful had eventual problems later,
most likely caused by my messing about with overclocks.

With eBay stick to sellers with good feedback, don't pay over the odds, and don't be impatient.
Use a sensible maximum amount to bid, place in the last few seconds, and if you don't win then
never mind, try again later. Patience is key. I wanted to get a QX9650 CPU for benchmarking, but
they kept selling for at least 180 UKP, time after time. I waited, never coming close to putting on a
bid most of the time, but finally I managed to get one for 145 UKP which was much more acceptable.

PS. Have you checked to see how 780 SLI compares to a 970? Just curious... when I sold my two
3GB GTX 580s (bought used), I made a profit of 80, such that the effective upgrade cost to a 980
was only 100. 8)
