I am thinking of getting new memory and I am wondering if I can keep my old memory and get 16gb. I use my build for gaming and video editing.

Give it a try, might or not play together, would put the 8GB in slot 1 and the 4s in slots 3-4 to try and keep dual channel, if any problems let me know and we can try adjustments to get them to play - if they play from the start (prob 1066 or 1333 depending on mobo) might be able to get them to 1600 - let us know the model numbers

No...dual channel does not require matched pairs...or even the same size sticks to a degree. Many have mixed different brands and even data rates. Also todays system all basically use Flex mode (Intel) or AMD uses a similar type of thing as flex where the system looks at how much DRAM is in each channel and utilizes equal amounts in dual channel and the remainder in single channel mode i.e. if you have 3 4GB sticks and a 2GB and put 2 fours in channel A and the remaining 4 and the 2 in channel B you would have 12 GB running in dual and the odd 2GB of the second 4GB chip in channel A running in single mode..... or ....if you have 2 2GB sticks and a 4GB can put the 4 in slot 1 of Channel A and the 2 twos in slots 3-4 (the B channel) and all 8 will run dual channel
