I recently just built a new (1st) gaming pc and am now wanting to convert my old pc (bought new in 2008) into a media server, so to speak. I really want to use it for storing my music and video collection and to be played through my home entertainment center only (av receiver/tv). I know I will need to update the hard drive to accommodate all of my media and leave room for additional storage. Should i put in a SSD for OS or should I just up the storage capacity with HDD? My streaming needs will be met through roku for netfilx/hulu so I'm not worried steaming through the pc. I will probably do some lite interweb browsing as well but nothing serious. I was just wondering if anyone out there had additional ideas/thoughts on how to best do this of if I should upgrade any parts other than the hard drive. I would like to watch the videos from my collection in 1080p (via hdmi) as well. Not worried about 4K resolution. Below are the specs from Dell for the original computer :
-Intel #174; Pentium #174; dual-core processor E2200 (1MB L2, 2.2GHz, 800FSB)
-2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz- 2DIMMs
-Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3100
-250GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache&#153
-Genuine Windows Vista® Home Basic Service Pack 1
-Integrated 10/100 Ethernet
-56K PCI Data Fax Modem
-16X DVD+/-RW Drive
-Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio

Any hard drives should be fine as long as you partition them properly for the OS you are using.

You may want to go for this card as it's cheaper than the one MetalSparks has suggested http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4GH2K33893 and should be fine for a headless server like the one you will be making.

thanks to both metal sparks and pizzathehutt for their recommendations regarding graphics card. question to both of you: which one is quieter as well as better displaying video? Also, any one have preferences on programs for playing music and video? I know media player, plex and xbmc are all capable programs.

The one I selected was hands-down quieter - there's no fan, so it's silent, ahahah. It also gives you a full GB of vRAM vs that Nvidia's 0.5GB, has 80 cores vs 16, supports DX11 vs DX10, and has a higher clock speed.

Yesterday that HD 5450 was selling for $10 after MIR, and you can't get cheaper than that.

You're right - I misinterpreted what OP wanted - it seems to me he is describing a HTPC more than a server as he will be playing videos on it and outputting via HDMI.
