Does PCIe 1.0 x16 support HDMI audio?

Hello,

I have a pc I want to use for my tv. I currently have GIGABYTE GA-G31M-ES2L mobo that only has 1 PCIe 1.0 x16 slot. I have a EVGA 8800 GT that I now learned doesn't support HDMI audio, so I'm purchasing a Radeon HD 6450 PCIe 2.1 x16. I know PCIe is backwards compatible, but I need to know if the PCIe 1.0 x16 slot supports HDMI audio as well as video before I buy this card. I really hope I don't have to upgrade my mobo just to get HDMI audio. I understand I could use 3.5mm jack for audio, but I want the best quality sound and I believe HDMI offers that; Plus I plan on hooking my PC up to a home theater system later.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

HDMI isn't really better quality than an audio jack. It just supports more surround setups and has the convenience of everything running through 1 cable. As for the PCIe 1.0 thing, I would presume it does. Some sound cards run through PCIe 3.0 x1, which has much lower data transfer capabilities. I'm not 100% certain though, but my bet is that it'll be fine.

Well, if there isn't really any noticeable difference in sound quality with a 3.5mm jack compared to HDMI sound then I won't even upgrade and just use what I have. I guess I didn't mention that I use a SB X-Fi Xtreme audio sound card.

By the way, what sort of audio setup do you use (headphones, monitor sound, 5.1 surround etc.)?

Currently, I just use the tv for sound. I will be hooking it up to a 5.1 home theater system in the future.

Ah, now that changes things; in this case, only HDMI supports more than 2 audio outputs, so you'll need that for 5.1 surround. I did some googling, and I think I can now safely say that your PCIe 1.0 x16 slot will support HDMI audio.

Alright sweet, thanks! I also did some googling but couldn't find any concrete answers. I figured it would work. Thanks again!
