Hi guys, I'm thinking about upgrading my CPU. Right now, I have an FX6300 @4GHz, and to be honest: it is not what I expected. Everyone told me: 'it's a real bang-for-the-buck', but it doesn't perform really well in multiplayer games (singleplayer is good, I got a HD 7970). That's why I need your help.

Should I go for an FX8350 with a good 990FX chipset MB, or should I go for an Intel (4690k, 4770k, ...)? I play A LOT of Arma III and Battlefield 4, and (especially in Arma) my fps drop to the point where it gets unplayable (+- 20fps or less). BF4 drops to around 35fps on 64 player battles. Also plan to play GTA V.

I know the Intel choice is more expensive, but will it be worth the investement? I'm probably gonna buy a used one.

And please, fanboys, stay away.

The problem with AMD CPUs (FX) is that they have very low performance per core.

They are quite good when all the cores work, the FX 8 core could even beat a Core i5, but games don't benefit from having many cores (to be more specific, DX11 games). Games today use up to 4 cores (less usually).

That's why you're experiencing bad performance on gaming (multiplayer demands even more CPU power).

Upgrade, to a Haswell Core i5 definitively, it doesn't have to be the highest one. The i5-4460 more than enough for high end gaming and not bottleneck your HD 7970.

Ah thank you, I guess I'll go for the Intel choice then!

For the people interrested in buying a cheap CPU: the FX 6300 is GREAT for singleplayer games (except for some unoptimized games like almost everything from µbisoft). Just not for multiplayer.
