RAM: is XMP worth enabling?

So from what I read, XMP is supposed to autoconfigure your RAM to optimal settings when overclocking... I assume this means voltages and latencies.

I don't plan on OCing, so I bought an Asus h97 mobo, and a i7 4790... and I got a nice price on a pair of Kingstone fury 2x8GB 1866MHz ...

I notice they are running at 1600, and also that XMP option is not available in the BIOS. I think I read somewhere that fury RAM is not XMP. I did try changing the frequency in the BIOS to 1866 and making sure the voltage was at value indicated in manual (dun remember value), but it failed to boot every time, saying something like "failed to succesfully set overclock values" or smth like that.

So anyway, I just wanted to set the RAM to its 1866 MHz value, but failed. I am actually doing fine at 1600, so:

1.- Am I even able to only change the frequency on a h97 MoBo and a non-K cpu?

2.- Is it worth it? I suspect there won't be noticeable improvement.

thanks!
