Solution
Drive could be faulty or failing. Connect it to a PC and test it with SeaTools: http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/downloads/item/seatools-win-master/
Test with short and long test in that order.
Hey novice at 67. It sounds a bit odd. I can't tell for sure, but it sounds like there might be a problem with the HDD in terms of health. You could still download the manufacturer's diagnostic tool to test it and make sure that everything's OK with it, just in case. Usually when someone wants to record TV programs, the HDD should be formatted by the TV itself. Did you format it via the TV? Other than that this might be something that you need to turn to the TV manufacturer's customer support for.

edit: Looks like you already got a good answer from @Phillip Corcoran as well while I was typing.

Hope that helps.
