I purchased a wd red 3tb to use with my dock station for backups. When it showed up in disk management I could format and use only 2 tb which is due to it being mbr instead of gpt. The other 746.52 gb is not useable nor can I do anything with it. How do I successfully switch both partitions to gpt and make this thing one drive? Preferably in win disk management. Thanks in advance

Hey there, nonaddictedgamer!

I'm glad you figured out how to solve your problem with the WD Red drive.
In the future, I suggest referring to our knowledge base. There you will find a lot of info about the WD products and how to solve the most common issues with them. http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=6Pg5Y4

As for the default 4096 allocation unit size, this is basically the block size on your HDD when it is formatted in NTFS. The allocation makes a small difference with hard drives nowadays. In terms of space efficiency, the smaller allocation unit sizes perform better (i.e. 4K wastes only 2K per file, whereas 64K wastes 32K.
Though a lot of people prefer the biggest allocation unit size for their photos, music and movies...

Though a lot of people prefer the biggest allocation unit size for their photos, music and movies and use the default (smallest one) for their boot partition. But as I said, I don't think it's going to make much of a difference either way.
It's totally up to you.

Hope this helped! :)
