I'm new to PC building. I was trying to throw something together that can play games.

- i5
- msi z97 pc mate
- 2x4gb kingston hyper fury x
- xfx dd r9 290
- seasonic 620w m12ii
- 1 tb western digital blue
- sentey gs 6000 case

After checking that list, I noticed that I did not have the psu plugged into the cpu. This changed the "lightening strike" led flash that I had before to a 1 second light up. The case fans, cpu fans, and gpu fans actually start up this time. But, they stop as soon as they start.

I was hoping it was just a dumb mistake like plugging in the power, reset, etc into the wrong pins. But, I watched an MSI video of it, AND I confirmed the positions with my motherboard manual.

The standoff pins are in the correct position. I confirmed that with the manual.

I pushed the cpu fan all the way into the board (I heard/felt the pins click in).

I tried booting by unplugging the hard drive from the psu, unplugging the gpu (but leaving it connected to the mobo) from the psu, and powering without the ram plugged in.

At this point, the only thing I can think of is to take all of the parts out (uuughhhhh) and put the system together on the wooden table.

I was hoping someone could save me. I haven't messed with anything today, b/c I was in school all day, then I spent the last two hours doing homework.

I'm pretty scared that the mobo is broken.

Solution
take out the gpu and one ram stick...may be an old bios file issue. if it posts with onboard video then update the bios to 4.7. also make sure the 8 pin cpu power plug on the mb is connected.
No easy solution, unfortunately. Yes, I suggest taking the board outside the case (put it on its box) and start it with only CPU and CPU fan installed, both 24 and 8 pin power cables connected. See if the CPU fan does spin without turning off.
What i5 is the CPU?

4590. I know I have a non OC cpu w/an OC board, but I got it because it was $160, and I wanted a z97 for if/when I decide to get an i7 cpu. Well... I guess I'll get to work on taking this thing apart.

This didn't help me with my original issue, but I had fixed that (I still don't know how, I just took the ram, cmos battery, cpu power, and gpu. After reconnecting them, the computer stays on)

Then, I came back to complain about my computer powering with no video, tried your post, and this got the video up. Time to update, Thanks.
