Computer ignores speakers when headset is plugged in?

I'm trying to set something up so I can hear my gaming and skype conversation while also having a headset or microphone plugged in at the same time. However, whenever I plug in either of those things, the sound (which was previously going through the speakers fine) reroutes to the headset or mic (it's a yeti with an audio port) and I can't make it change its mind. Is this just a 'feature' of 8.1?

if you using the realteck audi chipset download there newest drivers. in the realteck control panel you can set it up that speakers and headphones can work at the same time playing two different audio streams.
