Hello, I haven't built a new machine like this in over 10 years. My last 2 computers have been Asus gaming laptops, which work wonderfully, but I wish to build a solid desktop for gaming. I am looking to purchase within the month. I do not have the case listed, but I have the proper one chosen for this build.

Will you please take a look at my list of components and let me know if I have chosen poorly on any item and why.

any advice and help is much appreciated.

Basically you spend so much on the motherboard, SSD, and too much Powersupply.
So i decided to lower the powersupply and the SSD, and get an AWESOME upgrade to the Graphic Card.

Why 750W? http://www.realhardtechx.com/index_archivos/Page362.htm

GTX 980 SLI recommended power is 750w, (So you can still upgrade to dual graphcard if you want)

I recon that 250 GB was too much, 120gb should be enough for your primary game and windows. But if you insists you can still bought a 250gb

About the case, i might recommend you
1. Corsair Carbide Air 540 (which had good airflow)
2. NZXT Phantom Full tower
3. NZXT H440 Razer edition (Which looks awesome)

thanks for the initial feedback guys!

I will be doing more than gaming, but that is the primary function. I really want to stick with the i7, would there be a better choice in mobo? tried to do my homework on the mobo selection and from what i researched the Asus was the way to go. thoughts?

I see what you are saying about the power supply. I was wanting to stick with corsair for the cooling/power needs so I could bump it down to the corsair 750w 80+ gold. have been pleased with the quiet and temps on a friends machine that has been running for 3 years. It is more beneficial to have the brands for the graphics card and power supply match, go with EVGA on both, do they work more in sync or am I good with corsair?

I dont like kingston storage, as i have experienced fails with that company. Read up on Samsung, and it seems to be pretty good in user/professional reviews. Looking at the price difference between 250g and 120g for the samsung SSD, is only $30, and I'm okay with sticking to the larger capacity. Is there a different company that you would recommend that would change the price enough to make it worth changing down to 120g then I would definitely consider it.

the case i have picked out for this build is Corsair

as far as getting the next lvl graphics card, i am on the fence about that.. it would be great but prices jumping almost 200 between the 970 and 980.. are they really that different?

I've changed the list to reflect the different power supply

any other thoughts or recommendations?

For the powersupply, basically its the same as long as its great brand.
But for corsair never touch CX because a lot of people had problem, so as long as its gold and 750W it should be enough.

Well, samsung is an awesome brand for SSD / HDD so it should be okay. and yes it was the cheapest on 256.

Your processor is the best you can get, and the motherboard is the best one also. (Just curious why did you pick the maximus mobo? Did you want to overclock or what. Cause if you didn't use that much, Z97 can overclock also with a cheaper prices) Before this Rig's im using (MSI Z97 Gaming 3)

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-intel-amd-motherboard,3902.html

Maybe that link will give you an insight.

Also did you play on 1080p/1440p/4k? Single, Dual / Triple - Monitor?

Graphic Card GTX 970 had VRAM problem which 3,5gb primary and 512mb secondary which is way slower. Yeah it was 200 bucks different. The power is also different.

If you are really into gaming, i suppose you will see that it will be a big difference, specially if you are playing on higher resolution. But if you stay on single / dual monitor 1080p or single monitor 1440p. 970 would be enough.

Well the truth is, i was giving you GTX 980 suggestion because, you did pick the "BEST Motherboard", Usually people most concern on PC are, Processor > Graphic Card > RAM > Motherboard.

Also what r u going to use this computer other than gaming? Design?

Thanks 11sphere92.

to be honest I just knew what processor I wanted and tried to research the motherboard best suited, I guess I got in over my head on the mobo. That is why I posted here, to get a more educated opinion.

I will generally not overclock, but would like the option to if I wanted. I have read your reply and you make a good case for the motherboard. I see where you are coming from.

I run my laptop and probably this new computer at 1920x1080. I have looked over the build and have adjusted the Power supply to an Evga 750w 80+gold, changed the Mobo to the MSI Z97 Gaming 5, and I have opted for the better video card in with the Evga GTX980!

here is a link to the build... Does it look right? http://pcpartpicker.com/p/4dcjgs

again, thanks 11sphere92 for your input.
