hello,
i am currently using an i3-3220 and i just want to know if i should get an i5-4590....
i am planning on playing games at a resolution of 1600x900....

Before upgrading the cpu you should consider upgrading the gpu first since that will influence gaming performance most. Only if your current cpu is causing a bottleneck in your system it would be advisable to upgrade it.

i3 paired with a mid gaming card like r9 270x will do the trick playing at that resolution. No need to upgrade as long as you have a capable gpu

oh yes . that would be a much better , and for that resolution the 4590 should be more than enough for good gaming
at 1920x 1080 my 4440 is giving really good playable fps
and what gpu are you planning to pair with it?
but for that resolution a 4460 would be enough
but for future upgrades it should well worth

It will be a nice upgrade to i5 but i3 will do the job specially with 750 ti. Upgrading to a better gpu is a different story. Day and night difference. Look at this video using same gpu with i3 and i5:

I3-3220 is a very capable cpu.
Unless your games need many cores, a i5 upgrade may not help that much.

What games will you play?
sims, mmo, and strategy games want one or two fast cores.
Multiplayer shooters will want more cores.
