Why do I get intermittent "communication error" on my Brother 3820cn scanner? USB connection

When I scan on Brother 3820CN sometimes it works. Most of the time I get a "Communications error" halfway through the scan. Printer has not worked for years. Just use the scanner.

Try a new USB cable.

If no joy, check Brother support website for newer driver package for that model.
