GT755m in Lenovo y510p smoking after plugging in charger.

I was playing Dying Light (with recommended settings) on my y510p with 2 gt755m's for about 30 min and my laptop just randomly shut off as if I took the battery out. Then my AC adapter started beeping and I unplugged it from the wall. My computer would not turn on at all. I then decided to take out the second gt755m from the ultrabay and the computer worked just fine. However the graphics card that I took out smelled very weird but I didn't think much of it. So I turned off the laptop, discharged it by holding the power button with the battery out, and put the gt755m back into the laptop. Once I plugged the AC adapter in the computer started to make a crackling noise and smoke started to come out of the vent of the graphics card. I immediately unplugged the adapter and took out the graphics card. The laptop still works fine and there doesn't seem to be any physical damage that I can see. However I think that the graphics card is fried, so I am sending the laptop back to Lenovo to either fix or send me a new one. I am posting this because I wan't to know if anyone knows what could have happened so that I can prevent it from happening again. I'm very careful with my laptop. I've never caused any physical damage to it (other than this situation), whenever I'm gaming i keep the graphics at the recommended settings and the laptop is always on an external cooler. Does anyone have any ideas?

Actuallly it sounds pretty simple: That video card/chip malfunctioned and burned up. Happens sometimes, though rather infrequent and usually without the drama of smoke and/or fire. Lenovo should be able to check it out to see if anything else was damaged. Sorry you had the problem, but these things do happen. Hope it all works out for you.

Thanks for such a fast response! Do you think that they would be able to fix with a new graphics card or should I just tell them to replace this laptop? It doesn't appear to have affected the other parts of the laptop and the port looks just fine, but I don't want this to be a reoccurring problem. What do you think I should do?

This happened to me while playing the Witcher 2 the other day. I heard a loud arcing sound and then smoke poured out the side and it died. But the smoke came out on the opposite side as the ultrabay card... so I think it either fried my main graphics card or something to do with the power coming into the computer? It smelt like burnt motherboard.

Mine also happened a month out of warranty. Still waiting to hear back from Lenovo.

Was yours still under warranty?
