Ok so I built my pc installed windows and I needed to update it. When the update was done it restarted and all I saw was my wallpaper. I have a vga and hdmi cable plugged into my monitor and computer. If I only had a hdmi cable in there would it fix the problem?

You *should* only have one cable between the system and monitor; either VGA or HDMI. As to your issue, I'm going to take a wild guess and say that your monitor is currently displaying the VGA output which your computer is seeing as a secondary/extended screen. Your primary screen is the HDMI output of your graphics card. I'd be curious to see if your desktop appeared if you switched your monitor from the VGA input to the HDMI input.

Either way, just connect one cable (recommend HDMI) from the graphics card to the monitor and it should resolve the issue.

^^ What he said. You're seeing the 'extended desktop' on your monitor as it's seeing it as the 'second' monitor and the 'primary' monitor is showing nothing. If you can move your mouse all the way off the screen on the left side and it disappears, that's a way to confirm it. Or if you don't see your mouse at all (it's in the 'center' of the missing screen) - try dragging it right until you see it.

Or just unplug the cables, and connect the ONLY the HDMI and see what pops up on the screen.
