Hello,
I am in the process of over clocking my 4790k and at 1.25v I can hit 4.7Ghz (stable for 3 hours on OCCT).
I have tried to get 4.8Ghz and ramping the V core up to 1.27 but this just causes instabilities.
Is it normal to get 4.7Ghz at what I presume to be such low V core? Whilst struggling to get 4.8Ghz without going outside my comfort zone?

Solution
1.25 isnt a low vcore mate. for the speed your getting though it is fairly decent.
any more than 4.7 and i would recommend switching to water cooling if you haven't already. as it copes with temp changes much better than air does at that speed.

whats your input voltage set to? Cache speed and voltage, ram speed also? system agent voltage can help also depending on the setting. some of these chips seem to hit a wall around 4.6-4-7, but you seem to have voltage and temperature headroom, so 4.8-4.9 isn't out of the question.

To answer you questions, yes, it is normal. I run mine at 4.7 with 1.24V. The only way i can get 4.8 stable is to ramp it up to 1.3V, which im not confortable with. It might only take a .025 increase in Vcore to get a chip from 4.6 to 4.7, then take .05 more to push it up to 4.8.

You have to be a bit lucky to get a chip that can run 4.8 under 1.3 Vcore.
