Hello all you helpful persons out there,

I just bought some new RAM to upgrade my old 4 gigs to 8 gigs. I did quite a bit of research about timings and voltages and ended up just getting RAM with exactly the same specs as my old, just bigger. Here is my current set up...

Mobo - EVGA P55 :
CPU - i3 550 Clarkdale 3.2GHz LGA 1156 w/ Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus :
PSU - Zephyr MX 750W : Mem - ADATA DDR3 1600 PC3 - 12800 1.50v "CL9-9-9-24" (2x2) :
Graphics - MSI GTX 560 Ti 2.0 GB Twin Frozr II :
HDD 1 - Hitatchi 7200 1tb 3.0 GB/s(originalhdd) : HDD 2 - Seagate 7200 1tb 6.0 GB/s

I bought some G. Skill RipJaws DDR3 1600 PC3 - 12800 1.50v "CL9-9-9-24" (2x4) to replace and upgrade. When I installed them however, my board gave me a "3A" error on the little display at the bottom that reads my temps. I installed both and tried a few times to get to the BIOS to check everything, but it locks up before the BIOS even starts. Tried one stick, same deal. Tried one stick with the other one, no dice. Just wondering if there is anything that I missed. I purposely bought the exact same specs and checked my MOBO specs quite a few times before purchasing since I know my rig is showing its age.

One thing I didn't try was taking out the MOBO battery and waiting a bit. Thought I would come on here and see if anyone has some other words of wisdom on the subject before I waste my whole night screwing around with new RAM.

I should also note, that upon putting back in my old RAM, my computer works fine and is currently what I am using to type this so I didn't manage to mess up the MOBO by hulking components around.

Edit 1: After looking a bit more, the 3A error is a Real Time Clock error. I have absolutely no experience with that and am currently looking in to it. Tried a few more times with the new RAM and still nothing. I also don't have anything else to test the RAM in to see if its defective so I'd like to exhaust all my options before trudging the return/defective route.

Solution
Try updating the BIOS, the RJ X were released along with the 1155 mobos, they should however work, mixing them with the older sticks may be another story. Update the BIOS and try each stick by itself - if all work then try them together and let us know what happens, may need to increase DRAM and MC voltage

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try seeing if i can upgrade my BIOS first. I can't see the RAM being incompatible seeing as how it has exactly the same everything except its 8 gigs vs 4 gigs unless it is an issues with the "it's so much newer than everything" conundrum. I looked at that list and the RAM I got was exactly the same on the list, only it is 8gb x2 4 gigs vs the 4gb x2 2 gigs. I would hope the exact same thing only larger wasn't an issue or that makes me quite cross. Hopefully its just an issue of outdated BIOS as I'm almost certain I have never actively messed with it. I do know my board supports 16 gigs, and looking through that list I saw almost no supported 16 gig combos and at a quick glance no 8 gig combos. Thanks again for the tips. If one of those works I will be sure to give you kudos.

Well. I updated the BIOS and tried the new sticks one by one. I made sure my bios was running 1.5v and it was. When I tried one stick at a time, I got BSOD on both of them. Put my old sticks back in and now I'm having to repair windows. Everything worked after BIOS update, I made sure to check. And I want planning on running old and new together, just new. Does the BSOD mean the sticks are bad? At this point I'm starting to not care as long as my rig will work again assuming windows repair can fix whatever happened. Just wanted a quick upgrade to put off a full computer build a bit longer

I don't have another rig to try them on. I think I'm done trying them on my current one. Now the question is try to RMA them and get some money back if they are bad, or hold on to them for a new rig and take the chance of them being bad. Thanks for your help!
