Hello,

We are having problems installing a new graphics card on our iBuyPower computer (Gigabyte GA-F2A88X-D3H, AMD A6-6400K APU with integrated Raedon HD graphics). We first upgraded to an XFX 550W power supply, reconnected everything and checked that everything was still working fine.

We are trying to install a EVGA GeForce GTX 960. Previously, I was using the onboard DVI and VGA connectors.

1. After installing the card and powering up, the card wasn’t recognized when the GeForce Experience installer is run.
2. When an 8-pin power connector is connected to the top of the graphics card, the system will not boot. I am sure I am keying the connector correctly.
3. I tried uninstalling all AMD RAEDON software and drivers with no luck.
4. In the BIOS, the “Primary Video Device” is set to “NB PCIe Slot Video”. I thought this may refer to a specific slot (the BIOS manual doesn’t say), so I tried switching slots with no luck.
5. I also tried changing the setting to “SB PCIe Slot Video” but I could no longer see any video and I had to reset the CMOS BIOS settings to get the display back.

Are there certain steps I should be following in order to install this graphics card?

Thank you,

I used DDU to remove any remaining AMD files. I also (previously) updated to the latest BIOS (rev F5). Still doesn't work -- any other suggestions?

I've installed my share of graphics cards, but I had problems updating the drivers for my GTX 970 last fall. It seems to me that the current crop of GeForce drivers are very prone to compatibility problems. I even returned a graphics card for that reason, and found that the replacement card had the exact same problem. It would not recognize the card and would list it as a generic graphics adapter. I tried everything for over a week on the first card and three or four days on the replacement. I uninstalled the previous driver. I used DDU. I reinstalled the OS. I deleted the CMOS. Like you, I had already updated the BIOS to the latest version. Each time I updated the graphics driver and restarted the system, the system would black-screen. And then I would have to recover the system before I could try something else.
As a last resort, I re-flashed the BIOS with the same latest BIOS version. I also cleared the CMOS and re-entered the BIOS settings. After that the driver updated as if it was the easiest thing to do. It has been running fine ever since.

So, I would try doing that last step on your system. I got the GeForce 344.75 graphics driver to work on my GTX 970. I would suggest that version.

Thanks @terry3546,

I did finally get it to work after uninstalling with DDU and connecting the 6+2 power connector. I did so many things, I'm not sure what the magic combination was. Thanks for your help. Now I need to see if I can get the onboard VGA working for a 2nd monitor.

That may or may not be possible depending upon the motherboard. For example, my Asus ROG motherboard is one or the other. In Auto mode, it will pick the graphics card if one is present in the PCI express x 16 slot. If you assign it manually, then you can specify the source of your graphics.
