Ok, I'm going to sound like a complete moron here. But this is driving me crazy.

I just ordered all of my upgrade parts for my Precision 690. One of them was a PERC 5i card so I can install 4 drives in RAID 1+0. I've read the user's manual on the card, and I've beat Google to death, and I've looked at every photo of the card I could find online. But there's still something that doesn't quite make sense. The user's manual says to connect the cables from the card to the "backplane". WTH is that?

Does the card go to the 4 HDD ports on the motherboard and then the hard drives connect directly to the card?

I'm sure it will all make more sense once the card arrives, but it's driving me insane because it doesn't make any sense to me right now (maybe I need to go to bed).

Thanks!

In case anyone else ever has this question after reading the PERC 5 user's manual: the instructions are refering to installation in a Power Edge server where the cables go to the mother board and the hard drives also still connect to the motherboard. Install in a workstation is much more straight forward, where the HDDs connect to the cables from the card and the motherboard connectors are not used.
