Ram not being used after a cpu upgrade

Hello,

So I've had a amd athlon x4 620 2.6ghz and since it was pretty slow I decided to upgrade to fx 6100 x6 3.3 ghz. It arrived and once I replaced it and made sure everything is setup correctly I powered on my pc only to realize that 3.98 gbs of ram is being used out of my 8gbs. I'm currently using m5a78lm lx3 motherboard and it has 2 ram slots and I have 2 ram sticks of 4gbs.
I tried re-arranging them and re seating the cpu and immediatly it recognized 8gb in bios and 7.2gbs were usable in windows so everything was great, but then 2-3 hours later I get a bsod, try restart and get 10 bsods in a row every time I tried to boot up. The pc did boot up but with 4gb of ram and everything was working but it is just too slow. So I reseated ram again and 8gbs were show and the same thing happened only after like 10 hours.
Now it's at 4gb and it's stable. I updated my bios and am currently thinking of reinstalling windows because I did change a lot of parts without reinstalling, but I really don't know what to do any more. I'm thinking it's the ram but it's confusing since for 2 years it has been working just fine with my previous cpu, but ever since I put in the new one I'm having issues. Does anyone have any suggestions or possible solutions? Thanks. :)

Also when it's 4gbs, bios shows 4gbs but windows shows 8gbs (3.98 usable) and cpu-z shows 8gb. Also I don't think the cpu is heating up because it at around 50 celsius the entire time.

the fact that you get BSOD makes me think you have a hardware problem
one of your ram sticks may be faulty so try this
put only one ram stick in and stress test it (try prime 95 or google it)
if there is no fail after a while you think is enough replace the stick with the other one and test it
if there is no failure you might try re-installing windows but it is not ideal...

I'll try it, but are you sure it could be the ram since it has been working just fine until I put in a new cpu.

I just tried, not stress testing but I took them and and tried seperately and it turns out my left ram slot died since non of the rams work in it. It's still a bit confusing for it to happen immediately after I get a new cpu.

It could be the cpu, motherboard or ram, but im not sure how you are going to test it any other way than that...
