HI, I'm trying to Use my Android phone as a remote control for my Desk top PC. I have no experience with Wi-Fi really so I'm a bit confused. I have an ASUS m5a97 r2.0 with "Remote Go!" running WIndows 7 64 bit & a Sony Xperia ray Android phone, with the Remote Go! software installed on both. Today I bought an Asus USB-N13 wireless adapter N300. On my PC I connect to the internet by a cable to LAN. Do I need a Router or something? all I want to do is use the "Remote Access" feature in the "Remote Go!" program to control the PC from my phone. any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Solution
If you have no wifi, then you need a wifi router. While it is possible to use a wifi adapter connected to your desktop, it will be pretty difficult to set up, especially if you are not already familiar with basic networking.
Get something like this:

Follow these steps:
1. Unplug the ethernet cable from your computer and plug it into the "wan" port on the wifi router.
2. Using a new ethernet cable (included with the router, connect your computer's ethernet to one of the four "lan" switch ports on the wifi router.
3. Follow the instructions for the wifi router to set up an internet connection and a...
Most remote programs require the phone and computer to be on the same network. Your desktop is fine since it is already connected. The only way to connect your phone to your network is to use wifi. If you do not already have wifi, you will need to get a wifi router/access point and set it up. If you already have wifi, then just connect your phone to the wifi network and everything should be fine provided that your desktop does not block have a firewall that blocks your remote program.

Thanks for the reply. So if I buy a router I don't have to connect it to a phone line or anything? I Naively assumed that since I have Wifi on my phone, that I could use the Wifi dongle on the PC to make them communicate? is the Router the thing I need for that to happen? If I have a router connected to my PC do I even need the WIFI dongle I bought? Excuse my ignorance I have never used WIFI

Maybe I should explain a bit more what I am trying to achieve :) I'm a musician, I have my studio set up in one room with the recording software on my PC, I have built a sound proof vocal booth in another room next door to the PC. I want to be able to just control the PC from my Android Phone. I basically just want to control one PC desktop music program to press record, stop, rewind etc & that's it. I don't want to use Wifi internet. I also have a bluetooth dongle on the PC & Bluetooth on my phone. So if any one has a solution to this I'm be extremely grateful :)

EDIT: would this thing be what I need?

4. Connect your phone to the wifi network you created in step 3.

Once you have done this, you should be able to get your remote apps to work.

Got the router today & managed to connect 2 PCs & my Android phone :) I can now remote control the main PC with the music programs on it from the other PC & phone! Plus I have internet on both PCs now which is a bonus :) I gave up trying to use ASUS "Remote Go!" & installed a free program called "Teamviewer"

Thanks for your Advice & time :)
