Gigabit Switch shuts down my Router when connected

Hello all. I have an Asus NT-R66U Gigabit Router that works well for my wi-fi needs and it includes a 4 port gigabit switch. I have my house wired with cat6 cable and would prefer to run most things off of a hard line. In order to distribute the network I got ahold of 2x monoprice 8 port gigabit desktop switches. The switches automatically detects the use of straight (MDI) or crossover (MDIX) cables and switches the connection to whichever is needed for the connected device. Therefore any of the eight ports can be connected to the upstream hub or router and the others connected to downstream PCs, hubs, or other switches.

I am using commercial cables from modem to WAN port on the router and from the port on the router to the port on the switch. I've used multiple (standard, not xover) cables to test routes and can confirm they are good. I get good connection to my router and can use wi-fi effectively if the switch is not connected but as soon as I set up the switch my router no longer works with wi-fi or hard wired connections. It seems as though the switch is somehow confusing the router. Strangely, it seems to work for a few seconds as I can see the switch (and attached devices) as clients on the router but then they drop off and nothing works so I have to unplug the switch from the router and then reboot the router.

I'm not great with networking, so I'm open to any suggestions. I have updated firmware on the router but have not found a way to do so on the switch. My only thought is that there is maybe an IPv4 / IPv6 conflict or the DHCP on the router doesn't like the switch? Again, I'm not great with this and I appreciate any help you can give.
