Okay so recently popped a 750ti in my old hp p7 (Msi gtx 750ti, 6 gig stock ram, win 7, amd phenom 2 840t, 1tb hard drive) and I got hooked on pc gaming. My pc plays most games on med/high but I was something w LOTS more umph. With tax refund coming I have about 1000$ to buy some stuff. I wanted to but the main things and possibly reuse disk drive and hdd from my current pc if possible. I want to get a Motherboard, psu, gpu, cpu, ram, sata3 ssd (as I read it will really help out performance), and a few other things. Here are the parts I have saved in amazons saved list Intel Core i5-4690K Processor 3.5 GHz, Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB 2x8GB DDR3 2400MHz PC3 19200 , EVGA GeForce GTX 970 Super Clocked ACX 2.0 4GB GDDR5, Crucial MX100 512GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD , Corsair RM Series 1000 Watt 80PLUS Gold, Toshiba Desktop 7200 3.0TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s NCQ 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive, Thermalright True Spirit 140 BW Rev. A, ASUS Z97-A ATX DDR3 2600 LGA 1150 Motherboards Z97-A. This is the start though its 1500$ for just those! Anyway does anyone have any suggestions for me? Im pretty much totally new to this. I want a really good pc that will last me for years and be able to be upgraded here and there. Im really happy with my 2011HP w the gtx 750 ti so I want to build something that I will make a huge difference. As I say Im really new to all this so please be gentle

You don't need a 16gb ram for a gaming pc.8GB is plenty for now.
And 1000w of psu is too overkill.

What you think about this?

First things first you don't really need 16gbs of ram unless you're going, going with 8 would be fine for now as it can be upgraded by adding additional ram later later. The mhz of the ram wont cause a noticeable change while gaming either so using around 1600 is good enough.
Something like This Would work perfectly well for quite a while

The corsair RM series isn't that good from what I've heard and 1000 watts is overkill as the GTX 970 is extremely energy efficient. Anything around 600 watts would be fine but if you want to be safe you could get a Evga Supernova 750w B2 at around 95 bucks on amazon.

Storage is based on your preference although you can stand to drop the ssd down to 256 to save around 100 more dollars.

Everything else is pretty solid, although you have to remember to count your cpu cooler as well, seeing as you're getting a i5-4690K you're probably going to want a aftermarket one

Great advice guys. Thank you, I am really liking your updated parts list. So I am going to have to get Win8 also I just remembered and would I be able to reuse my 1tb stock hdd? Has all my games and stuff on it. Would you recommend the Msi card over the evga? I have the msi 750ti twin frozr now and I really do love it.

Both the msi and the evga are about the same, the msi is marginally better though. If you can remove the hdd then you can reuse it, but you'd have to reformat it though.

Heres another question, Intel Core i7-4790K Processor or the i5 4690k? The reason I ask is on amazon theres a little discount if I get the i7 with the asus z97. Updated, now I see Amd has an 8 core cpu for 180$!? Anyone know the deal w these?

The i7 is definitely better than the i5-4690k, if you can find a way to fit it into your budget then go for it.
Amd 8 cores have 2 types of cores, 4 normal cores and 4 weak cores. the weak cores process the instructions while the normal cores do the heavy lifting. This is better for programs that only use a single core as it allows them to use two. While gaming however, the games are probably going to use more than a single core so an i5 or an i7 are better in those situations.

Hmmm, okay then im going to figure out how to work it in. All the other components would still be compatible with the i7 right? I also read some bad reviews on newegg for the ASUS Z97. Should I pick a different brand or model or stick w it.

the z97 is perfectly fine, everyone that gave it bad reviews just got DoA ones, which happens with every part. Some people are just salty about it. As long as you buy it somewhere reputable you're good to go.

Okay well thanks so much for all your help! I greatly appreciate it. Heres my updated build save in newegg. Asus Z97, Msi gtx 970, Intel i7 4790, Evga 850 gold, crucial 256gig ssd, gskill 8 gig 4x2, windows 8, coolmaster cpu fan. I know I still need thermal paste a case and possible better harddrive n diskdrive but wanted to get the main components, so I can beam a smile at them, until I can get the lesser expensive stuff. Hows it look? Will It be a gaming monster? That's all I care about. Also, should I get a mid or full size case? I have a ton of room.

actually the i7 4790K will give you nothing more in gaming but in 3D rendering yes
if you do not plan on doing any kind of rendering ..a i5 4690k is plenty enough...even with far cry 4 game it give no more fps with the i7 4790K

but if you have a deal on the i7 ...go for it

I was just hoping that buying the i7 itd last longer for developers than the i5. I didn't want to get the i5 and a year from now need a better one because game settings go up. Just speculating, but don't really understand the ins and outs. Im making my 1st order tomorrow and will probably get processor, fan and ssd or maybe processor n mobo. So im researching like crazy today so I make the best decision. Now I do record and upload some gameplay footage and stream here n there.

Ok first off that psu is as overkill as you can get, a quality 600w will be plenty for that build, you also dont need 2600mhz 16gb ram for gaming, 8gb with 1600mhz will be enough, ask yourself if you really nedd 500gb ssd for windows and programs, it just affects loading times in games, i would get a 256gb one and install windows and frequently used stuff on it.The optical drive is too expensive and you have to ask yourself if you are really gonna need it since you can get anything for download.the motherboard is a bit overkill, you could go with something cheaper. The gpu is a good choic but you can go with a zotac 970 or a 290x if you want to save money, you have to make sure your 290x will fit in the case though

I just ordered the i7 and asus z97 today :D . I tweaked a little bit of stuff and am getting 8g gskill rpjws, a 850 wtt psu, 250 ssd, msi gtx970. Im sticking w msi as i have the msi gtx 750 ti now and love it. Just wanna build a gaming beast w well above average components.

While you really shouldnt cheap out on the psu, that does not apply to wattage as much as quality of a psu, you should get something form a good quality company with a 80+ certificate, you should post it here before buying to verify its good.850w is still overkill for the psu, the 970 can run with a good 500w one , although you might wanna get something around 600w for upgradability or sli

thats a good one, but you still dont need that much wattage this one will be plenty, you could run two of the 970s on it http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA24G2HM7105&cm_re=evga_650_gold-_-17-438-026-_-Product
this one is good too but still overkill http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438027&cm_re=evga_750_gold-_-17-438-027-_-Product

PS:

I know you already ordered but just for future references. While its true it probably will last longer thats not really how it works, latley there hasn't been a lot of increase in cpu preformance and cpu usage is completley dependant from game to game and not as much what video settings you use in game, for ecample cpus calculate pysichs for games, coliison detection, ai, netcode and such, my old i5 760 will not bottleneck most games at stock speds and none at overclocked

you should buy a cpu cooler if you plan to overcloack or want the cpu to be cool.the cooler master hyper 212 is very good and very cheap or if you want something heavy duty noctua is great. Also some fans in the case for good airflow
