Migrate from HDD to SSD

Hi,

My Windows 8.1 PC would not boot last week (following a Windows update...), however I was able to recover by using an Acronis True Image bootable CD to access and restore an Acronis True Image backup of my C:\ drive that is stored on an external HDD. Therefore I know the backup works.

I would now like to replace my HDD (where the C:\ drive is) with an SSD (Possibly a Crucial BX100 250GB SATA 6Gb/s 2.5" Internal SSD part # : CT250BX100SSD1).

Do I just remove the HDD, replace it with a SSD, and then boot up with the Acronis bootable CD and restore from my backup to the new SSD? And hey presto everything works?

Seems like this is too simple, and I am missing something?

Thanks for any advice,

Stewart

Solution
As long as your backup is of the disk and not just the partition, this will work great.
Aside from the partition, you need the boot record and any Windows reserved partitions (usually a 100MB partition at the start of the drive).

Great, thanks for the advice.

The back up does include taking a 0.1 GB System Reserved element, so looks like I will be good to go. Just need to buy the SSD now.

Thanks again,

Will do, am going to be making a number of backups to different places whilst I await the delivery of the SSD!

Will ensure these backups are disk rather than partition based on your advice. Many many thanks,

There is one issue which I don't know if Acronis works around or not, it's something I found using Windows backup regarding partition sizes. I found when I did a bare metal backup (backups all partition information of the source drive regardless of the data it's backing up) I had to shrink the source partitions before they would fit onto a smaller drive.

Thanks for the advice. Upgrade went really smoothly, and am very pleased with the results.

The only challenge faced took me a few hours to fix....using an old version of the Acronis boot disk, not the version I use for creating the backups. Couldn't work out why the backups were not recognised as valid.....doh. stupid user!
